Solo Travel Tips-Halloween-5 Places-Washington, DC: If you are a resident or visitor in my hometown of Washington, DC, here are 5 solo travel tips for a fun Halloween.

Halloween is a favorite among unofficial US holidays. Some of our top suggestions are:

Solo Travel Tips-Halloween-5 Places-Washington, DC:

No. 1: Canine River Cruise

As a long-time resident of the Nation’s Capital, I see river cruises as a great way to get a contrasting cityscape view. (Think gliding through the canals of Amsterdam looking up at its amazingly varied rooflines.) Can’t imagine the festivities without your Best Friend? No worries! Try out a K-9 river cruise and compete for “best-dressed”!  Canine Cruises.

No. 2. Zoo Fright Night:

Bats? Or Big Cats? Night of the Living Zoo. If you’ve had it with trying to locate the nearest cat cafe or attempting to photograph elusive wildlife in natural settings, the Night of the Living Zoo may be a perfect prelude for your Halloween. You are assured of the opportunity to view a huge variety of animals up-close and personal at the National Zoo. This adventure will register with the child in each of us and may even give you dreams of boisterous bats and marauding monkeys! Follow the paw prints! There will be live music, food for purchase and costumes galore.  Night of the Living Zoo.

Solo Travel Tips-Halloween-5 Places-Washington, DC: No.3 Bar Crawls in Georgetown:

If you prefer elegance to elephants, Georgetown’s Café Milano is the perfect antidote. Put on a costume and head over. Do call first for reservations and make certain you won’t be the only one in costume! Cafe Milano.

Solo Travel Tips-Halloween-5 Places-Washington, DC: Ghost Tours in Historic Lafayette Square:

Most visitors to Washington know at least a little bit about the fabled American Adams family. From Presidents John and John Quincy Adams to Abigail and Sam, the latter patriot best-known for the popular beer bearing his name, they span two centuries of US history. Moving forward, descendant Henry Adams added to the family mystique with the tragic story of his wife Marian “Clover”’s suicide. The Saint Gaudens statue in her memory in Rock Creek Cemetery is one of the most photographed of such romantic images. The relatively short walking tour won’t leave you breathless (no uphill trekking) and will afford ample opportunities for taking nighttime photos of the White House.    Ghost Tours-Washington.

No. 5. Dog costume parties:

As any proud K-9 parent knows half the fun of Halloween is finding the perfect costume for your dog or even matching outfits? Pet emporiums from the big box stores, like Petsmart and Petco to smaller boutiques like the Cheeky Puppy are celebrating with K-9 patrons welcome.  In Washington, Halloween celebrates fashionistas of the 4-legged variety.
