Top Solo Travel Destination Quebec City Bargains: I have been five times to Quebec City. It is one of my top places on earth to spend time! The reasons?

  • It feels like France, but it is half the price.
  • It has charm, cuisine, history.
  • As one of the last remaining walled cities, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Year-round there are sports to enjoy.
  • The prices are good also for US dollar based travelers.
  • There is so much to do and see.

History of Quebec That Makes it Special:

  • Quebec has a very unique history making it a top North American destination.
  • In addition, Quebec is  great for ways to save and feel safe traveling solo.
  • As a result of its history, Quebec has preserved its unique foreign flair as French-speaking America.
  • In our school days, we all learned about Jacques Cartier’s arrival in “New France”.  At the same time in the Old World, Francois I was king. He was famously known for many things, including as patron of Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci spent the last years of his life in the Loire Valley not Italy!  As a result, he was buried in France in the heart of the chateau country.  That French culture followed Cartier to the New World.
  • In the early 16th century, other Europeans arrived in what became Quebec Province.  They found easy access via the St. Lawrence Seaway. The fur trading and fishing sectors grew but later were surpassed by farming.
  • In the early 17th century, the second fabled Frenchman arrived, Samuel de Champlain.
  • By the next century, however, France began to lose its control of Quebec. There was a local shift in sovereign powers. This reached a climax in the 1759 Battle on the Plains of Abraham. The British forces were led to victory by General Wolfe. The French were led by Marquis de Montcalm. Ironically, both died from wounds suffered there. Canada was then to be governed by the British under George III. This coincided with the opposite result in America as the US shortly thereafter achieved independence.
  • During the 20th century, tensions between the French-speaking Quebecois and English-speaking Canada increased. A separatist movement resulted. Nonetheless, after two referenda, the die was cast. Quebec Province would remain in Canada.
  • The national government is now led by recently elected Justin Trudeau. He is, himself, the son of the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
  • Tourism is active in Quebec Province. Montreal, as the largest city, is a a popular destination with its Old City. It has a gleaming modern center that attracts business travelers. It has been a long-time finance center. Montreal is also home to one of Canada’s top schools, McGill University.

Quebec City, my personal favorite, has retained an Old Town/walled city that rivals many in Europe.

  • For me, it is second only to Paris as the place I have visited most often outside of the United States.
  • Quebec City has received more than twenty awards given to North American cities.
  • In addition, although very historic, it is not a city looking back to the past. It has a strong 21st century focus. Top industries include information technology, telecom and electronics with 540 companies in the Metro area. Other key industries are life science, food processing, financial services and green building materials.
  • Quebec City’s active arts community includes contemporary theater at the Carrefour. Art lovers can visit the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec. It has both French Impressionists as well as Quebec artists. Local art galleries and shops are also everywhere throughout the city.
  • There are special events throughout the year.  Missed the Tour de France?  You can still catch the August Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec. Alternatively, make Quebec City your holiday destination with its local “German” Christmas Market and the Winter Carnival.

Things to Do:

  • Marvel at the fall foliage along the St. Lawrence.
  • Try out a hike in Mont-Megantic National Park by day. Go there to see the stars in the dark. When it is cold, ski or snow shoe in the park’s wide fields!
  • In cold weather, go dog sledding, skiing or ice skating.
  • At Christmas, follow the medieval choristers singing carols through the Old City past the Place Royale. (Shop at the local Christmas store year round.)
  • Never been to Mardi Gras? Try out the Carnaval de Quebec instead.
  • If your timing is right, take advantage of Les Chemins Invisibles, a  free annual performance by Cirque du Soleil.
  • Take the ferry boat along the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
  • Sample top cuisine at low prices.
  • Visit the authentic market where only French is spoken.
  • Explore the Plains of Abraham, site of the leading battles between the French and British.
  • Climb up to the Citadel. It was built for protection during the 19th century.
  • Pop into shops along the way.
  • Stroll towards the city gates and surrounding wall.
  • Don’t resist buying gift items with a moose on them!
  • Stop in at the Chateau Frontenac. This was the site of the meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt. This was at the height of World War II just prior to the D-Day invasion. If your budget permits, follow the link or go back to our Home Page Booking.com search box and check rates/dates.  I have stayed there often in winter when temperatures and rates both decline substantially!
  • Take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
  • Venture outside the historic area to local coffee shops and bookstores nearby.

Auberge du Trésor in the Heart of Quebec City:

  • Although only 3-stars, I added the Auberge du Trésor. The reason?  I have been there and often admired it.
  • It also has a great location and is well-priced.
  • It is small and quaint. That does mean you won’t find an outdoor pool or amenities of a modern complex.  However, staying in the Old City is about enjoying its historic charm.
  • In the on-site Restaurant 1640, there are many, varied offerings. In good weather, there is dining outside. In addition, there are lots of alternatives just steps from its front door.
  • Guest rooms do have modern conveniences. They include a digital cable TV, free Wifi and a private bathroom.
  • If you would like a view of the neighboring Chateau Frontenac and exposed stone, request that specifically.
