Top Solo Travel Deals-New Orleans: I have spent a lot of time since my childhood. For much of that time, I have had family to visit there. As a result, I have seen much of the elegant Garden District and the lively French Quarter. In my student days, I enjoyed riding back on the Mississippi ferry boat when it was free.

New Orleans is best known by tourists for the Mardi Gras. However, it is so much more. It is one of America’s most historic cities. It is filled with elegant homes but also swamps with low hanging moss. It has a decided international flavor.  Its multiple top cuisine options are well-known.

Top Solo Travel Deals-New Orleans: Things to See and Do:

  • Sample Crayfish Etoufee and Cajun Cooking.
  • Toast Happy Hour with a “hurricane” drink—only if you are not driving.
  • Stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River.
  • Take a ride on the Ferry.
  • See the fabled St. Louis Cemetery with its above ground tombs and French inscriptions.
  • Ride the “Bus” “Named Desire” since the cable car has been retired.
  • See the French Quarter’s antiques on Royal Street.
  • Watch artists painting the Brulatour Courtyard.
  • Check out the late nights on Bourbon Street if you like.
  • Have brunch in the more sedate Garden District. See the stately homes and unique wrought iron fences. (One looks like corn on the cob. It dutifully is painted yellow in part!)
  • Join a tour of local plantations or in the bayous.
  • Be sure to see the heart of the French Quarter. Start at the St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. Then go to Pirates Alley and the Cabildo. You will likely find artists offering to sketch you!
  • A must? Have a strong coffee and pastries/beignets at the Café du Monde open 24/7.

Solo Travel Vacation Packages-New Orleans: Charming B&B:

Maison Perrier B&B:

  • With only nine guest rooms, the 4-star Maison Perrier B&B books up fast. The size is just right for solos to meet fellow travelers.
  • The prices are really attractive in warm weather.
  • This bed and breakfast is located in the fashionable Garden District and has a real feel for New Orleans.  Having often visited the Garden District, I recall that cable cars, buses and public transportation were easy and inexpensive. It is a quiet and elegant area, but night owls will find a quick commute to the lively French Quarter. The Maison Perrier has free WiFi and free parking.  (If you rent a car, you will find parking challenging in the French Quarter. I have seen enterprising drivers park partly on the sidewalk. No word if towing is a likely risk!)
  • The Maison Perrier  is historic and features  antiques and offers ornamental woodwork. It was previously the home of a prosperous local businessman and has the charm of a bygone day.
  • You will enjoy a home-cooked breakfast each morning. It typically includes yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries or bagels, cereals, juices, and coffee or tea.  Have a sweet tooth? Brownies and fresh-baked cookies or cakes are available free of charge plus a variety of teas. On Friday and Saturday evenings, guests can also enjoy complimentary cheese and fruit.
  • Air conditioned guest rooms have free WiFi and a flat-screen TV plus CD player. In addition, there are private bathrooms with comfortable bathrobes and specialty toiletries.
