Top Solo Travel Deal Economical Europe: If you have given up on a European vacation because of the cost, consider Central and Eastern Europe for real value. One of my personal favorites? For a White Christmas or a summer’s hike, visit Bled, Slovenia for a great value.
Things to do and see:
I had heard of Bled for years. It was still part of then Yugoslavia. In the past century, it had been well-known to European tourists. This small village has the charm of Old Europe away from the bustling modern capital of Ljubljana. Tourist photos of Bled most often show a small charming church in the middle of Lake Bled. Unfortunately, since there is no bridge, it can only be reached by boat when the ice melts. I arrived one February en route to skiing in the Slovenian Julian Alps. The lake was, in fact, frozen. Up on the hillside was a castle overlooking the village. Adjacent was a museum of medieval and other memorabilia. I highly recommend Bled and Slovenia in general as either a standalone destination or as a connection in Central and Eastern Europe.
Where to stay:
The informal Maline Apartments are perfectly located and at a price much less than western Europe. Just 5-minutes walk to Bled Castle and 1,000 feet from the fabled Lake Bled, it is also near the town center.
Apartments have separate entrances and 2 bedrooms in many cases for the offered price. There is also free Wi-Fi, balconies, cable TV and a bathroom with a shower. Most importantly, you will have your own kitchen with microwave, coffee maker, toaster and stovetop. Grocery stores are within walking distance as are restaurants and bars. Reception is available 24/7 as well as free parking.
This is the ideal casual holiday for biking or hiking in the warm months and ice skating in the heart of winter.
Both bus station and railroad stations are nearby.
