Solo Travel Destination France Wine Country:

Castle hotels are my very favorite place to stay on vacation. While you can find newer copies of the “Old World” around the world, it only makes sense that most of the truly authentic ones are in Europe. As I discovered as an exchange student abroad, castles were originally primarily fortresses. As such, they were set on high hills to protect the villages below. As a result, many were made of dark, heavy stone. Luckily, most have been updated to provide all the modern conveniences expected by today’s tourists.

On the other hand, palaces were very elegant and built as royal residences or those of the top officials or aristocracy. As a result, you can expect high ceilings, sumptuous rooms and ornate features inside and out. Most still have formal gardens surrounding them. Select palaces are now also open to the public as national monuments or even high-end lodgings.
Both castle and palace hotels tend to be in the countryside. The good news is that tends to decrease the prices, especially off-season. While swimming pools, inside or outside are rare, most have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV’s and private baths. In any case, be sure to ask!

It is the perfect singles luxury vacation in a 4-star elegant Bordeaux castle Bed and Breakfast. Nearby access ranges from wine tasting, top cuisine to quaint villages.

Solo Travel Destination France Wine Country: Things to Do and See:

  • Take a tour of nearby Bordeaux.
  • Stroll the Place Parlement, Place de la Bourse and past the immense reflecting pool known as the Water Mirror.
  • Spin past ten romantic castles in Bordeau which may still be for rent. They include Chateau Cayac, Chateau de Lys, Chateau Duras and the elegant Chateau de Simon.
  • See the Bordeaux Cathedral which took four hundred years to build.  It was completed in the 1500’s.
  • Don’t miss the Tour Pey Berland right behind the Cathedral. There are more than 200 steps if you want to make your way to the top of this fifty meter monument. The statue on top faces the famed Medoc region which produces some of the world famous wine in the region.
  • Photograph the entire region from the dizzying heights in ancient church bell towers.
  • See the past in the Saint-Pierre Church, the Great Clock and Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux.
  • Check out the musée d’Aquitaine. (History lovers will recall that Eleanor of Aquitaine was both Queen of France and England having been married respectively to Louis VII and Henry II. She was the mother of Richard the Lionhearted who gained fame in the Crusades.)
  • Prefer modern architecture?  Take selfies at the Jacques Chaban Delman Bridge.
  • Explore local vineyards.
  • Sample famous Bordeaux wine. (If money is no object, you may even try Chateau Mouton Rothschild.)
  • Rent a bike, and create your own independent tour.
  • Hike the countryside.
  • Stroll the gardens, or just relax with a new novel.
  • Indulge in top cuisine and world-class cakes and pastries.
  • Go for a drive to nearby Saint Emilion. It is both a famous wine district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

The 4-star Château Senailhac:

  • This five bedroom bed and breakfast is perfect for solo travelers. It is large and imposing enough for guests to feel like royalty but small enough to meet fellow travelers. The owners are warmly welcoming so you will feel right at home.
  • The Chateau Senailhac gives guests the best of both worlds. It is  located in the tranquil French countryside but just seven and a half miles from Bordeaux nestled in vineyards. You will be surrounded by vineyards in this elegant updated 19th-century château. However, you will still have all the conveniences of home. That includes free Wi-Fi access in the public areas.
  • Each spacious guest room is individually decorated and has a view of the garden. A large private bathroom is also provided for each guest. No need to pack your hairdryer or a plush robe! They will be awaiting you at the  Château.
  • Fashionistas pack all you like including your Bruno Maglis! A wardrobe in each room means you will not have to live out of your suitcase but can unpack as soon as you arrive.
  • Daily continental breakfast is included  in your room charge. Afterwards, you can visit the guest lounge to check out the local tour guides on the region around Bordeaux.
  • Nearby restaurants include  L’ô à La Bouche a fifteen walk from the Chateau Senailhac.
  • While not sightseeing, you can stroll the  Château Senailhac’s gardens.  On sunny days, you may lounge on the terrace instead!
