Top Solo Travel Deals SE Asia Luxury Bargains: Traveling Asia Alone 5 Star Sofitel: My first experience with Sofitel hotels was in Cambodia. I found that service was excellent and the settings elegant. Another advantage you will find? Prices in Southeast Asia for lodging are much less than you will find elsewhere.
What to do while you are there:
There is plenty to do in Bangkok. English is widely spoken, and public transportation is easy. These are my personal recommendations for your stay in Bangkok:
Take a city tour to get oriented. Be sure the tour covers the multiple famous Wats or temples. I found most impressive: the Wat Arun and the Wat Pho. The latter has the gold Reclining Buddha, the entire length of the room.
Explore the Grand Palace and Wat Prakaew. Allow a half day or even a full day for this. As you start to exit, be sure to visit the museum which is attached. There are centuries of artifacts and intricate jewels as well.
Go on a river cruise. The city looks very different from the water. On my cruise, lunch was served. If your budget permits, take a “James Bond boat”. Otherwise, do what I did for just a small fee. With my private guide, I joined the large crowds lining up for the public water taxis. They go to the riverside Grand Palace and numerous other locations.
Save time to visit the province and ancient capital of Ayutthaya. If you aren’t planning to drive, take a day tour. There are two major sites: The ruins of the 14th century capital largely destroyed in the 18th century. Secondly, spend several hours at the Summer Palace. It was a mix of European and local Khmer architecture and one of my favorite spots.
For temples and royal palaces, both men and women must be dressed modestly. Check out the rules of each place you are visiting ahead of time to avoid being turned away.
Shoppers will be pleased to find not only traditional shops but street stalls (mainly weekends) and floating markets.
My trip to Southeast Asia was one of my best. In addition to Bangkok, take a look at our Mekong Delta river cruises. They have bargain prices and include Cambodia and Vietnam. See also our MT Sobek listing that adds Laos to the 3 other countries.
This 5 star Bangkok hotel and spa provides world-class service ideal for business or leisure.
You have a choice of workouts in its 75 foot outdoor pool or 24 hour health club. You can then relax with L’Occitane spa treatments and massages.
Guest rooms have free Wi-Fi and room service 24-7 . In addition, each guest room has a private bath with top toiletries. Do ask for the espresso machine!
