Ski in June, enjoy world class fishing or relax in a spa. This is one of the most beautiful natural settings in the world. It is also at the “end of the world”. It is in the tip of Argentina. Chile and Argentina both arguably have the southernmost town in the Hemisphere. However, it appears that Argentina has actually won!

  • The 5-star Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa is nestled in the Cerro Alarkén Natural Reserve.  As its name indicates, it is closest to the town of  Ushuaia, Argentina. This Antarctic town is on the island of Tierra del Fuego that is shared with Chile. (At last count two-thirds was Chilean and one-third Argentinian territory.)
  • This is the perfect place for a grand standalone vacation year round. It is also the ideal stopping off point before you cross the Drake Passage to Antarctica.  This is the perfect alternative to  just another summer at the local beach.
  • Alternatively, the 5-star Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa could be just the solo adventure for Christmas or New Year’s. As an adventure vacation for singles, you could leave bleak winter behind. After arriving in brilliant sunshine, you could go boating and have a beach holiday to the envy of all your friends back home shoveling the sidewalks!

Tierra Del Fuego:  An Overview of the Region and Its History:

  • Tierra del Fuego is a mix of a maritime region and cold winters and year-round snowy peaks.  It is not unlike parts of Alaska with the latter’s islands alongside the Inland Passage.
  • The Strait or Straits of Magellan separate(s) this literally “Land of Fire” from the continent of South America. Just to the south is the Beagle Channel.
  • Farther still is the land mass of Antarctica across the Drake Passage.
  • For centuries, Tierra del Fuego was inhabited by three main groups of indigenous people. However, the Europeans arrived in the 16th century.
  • The first to arrive were the Spaniards when Ferdinand Magellan discovered Tierra del Fuego.
  • Three centuries later the British arrived in the region. This has resulted in a conflict of the two sovereign powers which continues even today. (Argentina claims the Malvinas.  In 1982, Great Britain fought to continue its sovereignty over those islands. They are also known as the Falklands.)
  • Local settlers had arrived from both Chile and Argentina by the late 19th-century. The reason? Tierra del Fuego was seen as a prosperous region for raising sheep, prospecting for gold and finding newly discovered oil.

Ski in June Enjoy Top Fishing or Relax in a Spa: Things to Do:

  • First, skiers will be pleased to learn that the Resort is only 26 kilometers away from Cerro Castor Ski Centre or about a 20 minute drive.
  • Second, Tierra del Fuego is renowned for sport fishing, especially fly fishing for trout.
  • A third option: hiking through forests, fields and even glaciers.
  • Plan your trip around local festivals: Festival Nacional de la Noche Más Larga (Two weeks of music, tango and celebrations for the longest nights of the year in the middle of June.)
  • For a different type of solo travel adventure? Run the Desafio Ushuaia Marathon in March.
  • Don’t get left behind! Start training now for the yearly Marcha Blanca. This cross-country ski event follows in the footsteps of fabled Latin American explorer and forefather San Martin. In the early nineteenth century, he crossed the Andes.
  • Sample Argentinian wines and asado  (barbecue) straight from  the grill.
  • Take part in a late-night pub crawl. (There is even an Irish pub nearby in Ushuaia!)
  • Learn to tango, or at least enjoy watching the professionals show you how it’s done!
  • Shop for both local handicrafts and fine leather and jewelry.
  • Go on a boating tour.
  • Take the Tren del Fin del Mundo to the Parque Nacional. It has the reputation as not only being at the end of the world but apparently one of the slowest moving trains in the world! The good news? Think of all the great snapshots and selfies you can get along the way!
  • For a cultural tour, you can explore one of five museums. Lonely Planet recommends the Museo Histórico Kami. In their view, if you see only one museum this is the one to check out. One caveat: They noted that it is especially a good venue for Spanish-speaking tourists. If you don’t read or understand Spanish, do a quick Internet search as your guide so you can understand the history and exhibits shown there,
  • The 19th century governor’s residence is another option. In addition, see the church known as La Iglesia de la Merced.

The 5-star Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa:

The 5-star Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa boasts staggering views and 2 swimming pools.

  • Spacious guest rooms offer luxury as well as comfort. Modern conveniences include a minibar, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and naturally, both heat and air-conditioning. Each guest room has a private bathroom.
  • Guest rooms  have a breathtaking view of mountains or sea and overlooks the Ushuaia Bay and the Beagle Channel.
  • If you are not looking to fish or ski? You can relax in the spa, have a massage, enjoy the swimming pool or sightsee at Encerrada Bay, just over 3 miles away.
  • Guests will have a choice of visiting the bar or a full meal of local or international cuisine in the on-site restaurant.

Ski in June, fish or relax in a spa. This is a really different kind of summer vacation to enjoy!
