For a well-priced, really first rate vacation, try out this Dutch castle hotel 4 star luxury destination. This is the perfect spot for real relaxation nestled in the European countryside. It is just the place to take a break from a too busy schedule back home.

The Kasteel Engelenburg is a Dutch castle or grand estate hotel.

The Surrounding Region:

  • The Kasteel Engelenburg is located near Zutphen. This town of 40,000+ dates back to Roman times. It received its town charter in the 12th century. As a result, it is officially one of the Netherlands’s oldest existing medieval cities. It is well located in a river valley on a tributary of the fabled Rhine River. The name Zutphen in Dutch refers to the town’s towers. The largest tower building is a church known locally as Walburgkerk. It is next to the old Town Hall, a favorite for selfies or more “traditional” tourist snapshots. Although it is not a very large town, it does have a restaurant awarded Michelin stars for fine dining at the “T Schulten Hues”. Watching your budget? Not to worry, there is even a McDonald’s! Nearby, it is practically a United Nations of global cuisine. Choices include Turkish, Italian, Eqyptian(!), Greek and Chinese.
  • The surrounding agricultural region is known as Veluwe in the Gelderland section of the Netherlands. It is nestled in tranquil countryside and adjacent to a lush national park. As a result, it is a popular destination for Dutch vacationeers.
  • This historic area is said to have the very best waterfront in Holland.
  • The region is also known for its multiple lovely estates and fine country houses.
  • Cultural sites include the Van Gogh Museum (the “Kroeller-Mueller” Museum”). Other major exhibits there include numerous French Impressionists paintings. With 160 sculptures, the Kroeller-Mueller Museum still features one of the largest such collections in all of Europe, There are fifty other museums to visit in the area.

History of the Region as Part of the Hanseatic League:

  • The local history dates back to the 9th-century time of the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne,
  • The next major historic development occurred between the 13th century and the 15th-century. At that time, the Hanseatic League came to power in Northern European. This alliance was made up of a merchant coalition.
  • By the 16th century Holland had been conquered by the Spanish under Philip II. However, the Spanish dominion over Holland was to be short-lived. Religious conflict between Catholic Spain and previously Protestant Holland continued to foment. Ultimately, the latter prevailed in forming in 1581 the Union of Utrecht.  The small town of Bronkhorst dating back to the 14th-century was  central part of that history. It was later the site of the battles in the Eighty Years War between the Dutch and the Spanish.
  • In the 20th century, the region was once again thrown in to conflict between sovereign powers. During World War II,  it was bombed but later liberated in the spring of 1945.

Things to do and see:

  • Explore the historic Hanseatic town of Zutphen which is only six miles away.
  • See the locks at Eefde, part of an intricate system of canals.
  • Hike through the thick forest in the Veluwe National Park. It is known for its “big four”: roe deer, wild boar, red deer and mouflons (a type of species of wild sheep).
  • Take in the weekly outdoor markets in Zutphen.
  • Visit the royal place of Paleis Het Loo. It has an enormous royal garden. The 17th-century apartments are open to the public. US  residents will recognize the names of William and Mary whose reign coincided with much of the history of Virginia and the colonies.
  •  Try  out the ferry for a different view of the shore and surrounding fields.
  • Visit the really small town of Bronkhorst. It has only 150 inhabitants. As a result, it is on record as the smallest town in the Netherlands! Ironically, one of its tourist sights is not exactly Duth: It is the Charles Dickens Museum!
  • Play a round of golf (within 2 miles).  For solo travelers, ask the hotel if they can match you up with a “golf buddy”.
  • Bike along the riverbanks or through the neighboring countryside for a little exercise.
  • Nature lovers will enjoy the five hundred plus different varieties of  plants and also local trees.
  • Look for local wildlife in their natural habitat, or visit the four local zoos.  Animals native to the region range from deer, snakes including the common viper, foxes, martens, wild boars and ravens.
  • Explore the area while riding on horseback.
  • Sample local watersports in more than 100 local lakes.
  • “Foodies” will enjoy visiting the local Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • Rent a bike beside the riverbanks of the Veluwezoom and the IJsselvallei.  (Best not to try to ask for directions unless you can pronounce those names! You may want to bring along a GPS instead!)
