Fall or Halloween Break 10 Spots to Save and Savor: Take advantage of off-season pricing and fewer crowds.
Looking for ghost tours for Halloween? Try New Orleans.
You can prowl through the St. Louis Cemetery, but do get a ticket first.
Then there’s plenty of time for Cajun Cooking and tall rum drinks in the French Quarter.
Finish the night with live jazz. Start the next day seeing the architecture in the Garden District or bayou boat tour for alligator sighting!
Old West fans a$nd US history buffs? Make your way to Rapid City, SD and nearby Mt. Rushmore National Park.
It’s easy to take a bus day tour to the National Park which is free. (If you drive, there is a parking fee.) They have about one million visitors a year from around the world. If you are a classic film buff, you will recognize Mt. Rushmore from Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest including the cafeteria (spoiler alert) where Eva Marie Saint shot Cary Grant. Be sure to save several hours to visit the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial. Top your fall trip off with a drive or tour through the Black Hills.
Quebec City, Canada, for fall foliage, hiking and French cuisine at almost half the price!
After 7 trips there, I put it at the top of my list year round. The Chateau Frontenac has its own K-9 Ambassador, Daphne, if you want to stop for a (one-sided??) chat! There is plenty of intriguing history of the early days of Quebec. The original wall remains so it’s easy to feel you are in Bruges at half the travel time. In winter, I recommend the skiing and the dog sledding. My fellow adventurers on the latter included a range from young children to grandparents. As a solo, I was paired with the guide so fortunately I didn’t join those who flipped off the trail fortunately in very soft snow.
Stroll Europe without the crowds:
In general prices start to drop as early as Sept. 9 each year. However, especially in the south of France, hotels may close shortly after the end of the season. Bed and breakfasts farther outside of the city of Nice may continue to be open as will large chain hotels.
In early fall, an elegant Florence country house has rates from $116,
Nearby Siena is even more often affordable but close enough to combine with trips into Florence and wine tours as well.
Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Croatia can be pricey in season, but rates there do start downward in the fall. To customize your own tour at your own price, follow this link.
Options there range from boating to strolling historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the summer Croatia has its own international film festival and is a great crossroads to combine with a trip to Italy, Greece and Turkey.
What more exciting way to spend Halloween than stalking lions for a selfie but not too close! There is tremendous diversity from Kenya to southern Africa. One huge surprise is the difference in climate which in parts of Kenya and South Africa make for very different weather patterns. In Botswana on elephant back safari in early Oct., temperatures reached around 110 or more. In contrast, as I went to meet the pre-dawn safari in South Africa in Sept, it was so cold I wore a jacket and guess it was about 50 degrees.
One key factor when you plan your safari, compare offers for the “green” season. That is often when there are great bargains and no single supplement deals available. I have read some puzzling definitions of the green season. One travel writer said it was between or after the rainy season but then said it was wet and humid? Sounds like it is during the rainy season? Do your research to see if this is a fit for your budget and comfort level and when the “green” season occurs each year.
Chase the Sun:
In general, prices can be lower in many sunny spots when the large tourist season is over. One exception can be in parts of the Caribbean. Prices in the summer can be softer there when the heat is extreme and start to slowly rise until prices soar in the winter. One option can be to watch out for the “ABC” islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. They have the reputation for being less likely to be in the path of a hurricane although prices can be softer as a result of adverse publicity about bad fall weather.
Here are several well-priced fall options:
For beaches and history:
For archaeological ruins and sunshine:
