Solo Travel Package Berlin Bed and Breakfast:  Berlin is a real blend of modern and historic Europe.

An Overview of Berlin’s History:

  • Berlin dates back to the 1200’s if not earlier. The surrounding area was then known as Brandenburg.  In the 15th century, Frederick I ruled as “Elector”.  He was followed by various Hohenzollerns known first as “Electors” and later Kings of Prussia.
  • In 1871, the German Empire was founded with Bismarck as Chancellor.  After World War I from 1914-18, the Weimar Republic was founded. It was weakened by problems such  as widespread inflation.
  • From 1933 until 1945, the Nazis were in power until  the end of WWII.
  • After the fall of the Wall in November 1989, East and West Germany were reunified the following year.  In 1991 the capital of Germany was moved from Bonn to Berlin.
  • Berlin has once again become one of Europe’s most vibrant cities and a leader currently in the European Union.  The historic sites remain important today but are blended with 21-st century Berlin.

Things to do and see in Berlin:

You will have a choice of half-day and full-day tours walking, on bicycles or even on Segways. Another option is to create your own tour via a hop on and off bus to see 18 locations, or go via river boat on the River Spree!  There is even a new “Airport Layover Tour”.

  • As an exchange student in Gymnasium, I visited Berlin. It was still divided then into East and West.  I spent a day sightseeing in East Berlin going through Checkpoint Charlie. I photographed the famous Brandenburg Gate from both sides. The Brandenburg Gate leads into the fabled Unter den Linden built under the direction of Prussia’s King Frederick William II. I also especially remember the St. Michael Church near the Wall. It had been heavily damaged during World II. The Kurfürstendamm (“Ku’damm), although divided,  continued to a main thoroughfare even  then.
  • After November 1989, everything changed.
  • Other often-visited tourist sights are the Reichstag, the Berlin Cathedral, the Opera House and multiple museums.  Chief among the latter are the Altes/Old and Neues/New Museums and the Holocaust Museum.
  • The interactive DDR Museum was twice nominated for European Museum of the Year. It has approximately 500,000 visitors each year both from, and outside, Germany, including school groups. Exhibits bring to life the period of time when the German Democratic Republic or East Germany was separated from the West by the Wall and fences with landmine fields.
  • The Potsdamer Platz is another historic venue of pre-1945 Berlin. In the city, you can visit the prior royal palace known as the Stadtschloss. Just outside the city is the Charlottenburg Palace. On Sundays, there is a popular flea market.
  • Friedrichstrasse was famous as an access point to then East Berlin. Now it is a chic shopping district. Another option? Stroll the flea market to find real bargains.
  • See the famous Berlin Zoo or Tiergarten.

Arts World in Berlin:

Berlin is a leading European art venue with approximately 450 art galleries.

  • Artists from around the world work from Berlin. Active Artist-in-Residence Programs have been set up  as cultural exchanges.
  • The Savignyplatz has three galleries focused on established artists as well as select contemporary artists..
  • The Mitte district and the Potsdamer Strasse/Luetzow Quarter have multiple contemporary galleries.

Special events:  9th Berlin Biennale Summer 2016 through Sept. 18

This is a global event for Contemporary Art. Every two years this special exhibition includes both internationally recognized artists as well as those just coming to be known as emerging artists. This is very cutting edge and includes the virtual world.

Solo Travel Package Berlin Bed and Breakfast: Hotel de Linnen:

Hotel de Linnen B&B is located in Prenzlauer Berg. This is currently a trendy district of dynamic Berlin.
