  • There were two very famous Greeks born in Crete.  The first was the artist known as El Greco born in Gortyna. The second was Venizelos born in Canea. He became one of Greece’s best-known statesmen. Today in Washington, DC, you can see his statue in front of the Greek Embassy.

Traveling Europe Alone 5-Star Crete Top Solo Travel Deal: Overview of  Crete’s History:

Crete has an ancient history dating back to at least 7,000 BC.

  • However, Crete is most famous for its Minoan culture.  Its height was reached in 1450 BC.
  • The name was said to be for a King Minos. Like England’s King Arthur, it is unknown if this was merely a legend.  At that time, there were tales of a fierce beast known a Minotaur.  Its victims would wander through a labyrinth to avoid being sacrificed. The Minotaur according to legend had a bull’s head. That image was often used at that time in two ways. One was in relation to the royal family. The other as shown in paintings of both young men and women “bull leaping”!
  • Within fifty to one years, the Mycenaeans came to power on the island.
  • For centuries that followed, different invaders were to dominate.
  • In 67 BC, it was the Romans who conquered Crete.
  • By the 4th-century AD, the Byzantine Empire ruled.
  • A change occurred with Spain conquering Crete in the 9th-century.
  • The Ottoman Empire dominated by the 18th-century.
  • It was not until the early 20th-century that Crete became part of Greece.
