Paris can work for a wide range of budgets. For solo travelers tired of paying “2-for-the-price of-1”, European lodging provides relief. Many, if not most, offer a reduced rate for “one adult one room” versus “Two adults one room”. Unlike the standard “rack rate” elsewhere, single travelers can receive discounts of 40%. Even the 5-star Stockholm Grand Hotel has solo-priced deals.
While some hotels and bed and breakfasts have smaller “single rooms”, others provide discounts for standard or double rooms occupied by only one adult. For London, Paris, Italy and Greece, we have just added 20 new listings to our 191 “Top Value” lodgings on our free solo search tool website at the SoloTravelPricingTracker.net. Check often as we have frequent updates.
For even lower prices, go off-season if possible. One Jan., I was in Paris and stayed at another 4-star Left Bank hotel at half-price. That is fairly standard in winter. If you want to go to art galleries and museums, the brisk weather should not cause you to stay at home. Better yet, there will be few crowd in museums, no need to stand on tip toes at the Louvre. Forget standing in long lines at neighborhood cafes.
Here is another tip I found personally that is much cheaper for lodging if you don’t need to be right in the city center. A work colleague and I were able to add a week’s trip through France after meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. We found an unheard of deal at the Charles de Gaulle International Airport for a modern Sheraton high rise for $99/night. Being located at the airport that, of course, meant low priced local public transportation was walking distance from the hotel. We spent all day in Paris and took the Metro or commuter train back to the hotel at the end of the day. Beyond airport hotels, suburban lodging near surface transportation can also be a great value. While it has been some time since that trip, the strategy still works both in Paris and other major capital cities abroad.
