Odd Holidays December 2015-Happy Tom Bawcock’s Eve

If you are looking for an odd holiday to celebrate, go no further: Today, Dec. 23, is Tom Bawcock’s Eve. Although it may get lost in the celebrations from Christmas to New Year’s, residents of Mousehole (England) have cause for festivities today. Based in Cornwall, this fishing village is the site where a legendary fisherman, actual name unknown, bravely fought storms returning with a hardy bounty of fish for the whole town. His loyal cat was said to have accompanied him perhaps causing the storm to come to an end.
Foodies may (or may not) want to sample the traditional Tom Bawcock’s Eve treat, Stargazey Pie. It is most often photographed with fish heads prominently reaching out from the pie, not necessarily the expected first choice for a holiday decoration. Undeterred apparently, many tourists flock to the local pubs to participate in the celebration and see the lights decorating the houses, harbour and even the boats.
Wishing you a very happy Tom Bawcock’s Eve!
