Packing Tips for Traveling Alone in Asia: It can be a challenge to know what to bring and what to leave behind. This is especially hard with the new restrictions on carry-on’s. With a weight often limited to 11 pounds, it is really hard to plan.
In preparing to travel alone in Asia, I thought I had packing down to a fine art. There was no margin of error with only one hour to change planes in Beijing. With a morning flight on to Cambodia, a boat to catch to Vietnam and flight back to Thailand, having my bag chase me around Asia was not an option.
As I traveled on to 4 countries, I have 5 updated tips to pass on:

1. In addition to stricter length, width and depth of carry-on bags permitted, weight limits have also been imposed. The Internet stated 15 pounds would be allowed. When I arrived at the gate, the actual acceptable weight was only 11 pounds which was checked randomly.

2. For entry into many popular tourist sites, men and women must be modestly dressed with the shoulders covered. The former must also cover their knees while women’s pants must cover most of the leg. Some kings’ palaces or temples may provide a covering to borrow for the visit.

3. Prepare for strong sun although the January climate was milder than my prior travels to Africa or the Amazon. The same protection plus insect repellent works for marauding mosquitoes although I only spied one the whole trip.

4. Bring a small flashlight. Even in a 5 star hotel, it helps to find your way when too jetlagged to locate the lights in the middle of the night!

5. Substitute a mini-tablet for a camera. It is a better way to judge which shots to keep or delete rather than via a small camera.
