Always looking for the best vacations for singles, I settled on a solo travel package making my way through Egypt. I had looked forward to seeing the sun set behind the Pyramids while I glided by on horseback. During a day tour, I stopped by the stables (As-Shaabit) to book a horse for that same day.
When my taxi arrived at 5 PM at the base of the Great Pyramids, it was not allowed to drive up the hill. I trudged up the sandy incline with no idea how to get to the stables from there. As luck would have it, a man on horseback suddenly appeared over the horizon with another horse in tow. I immediately shouted out, “Are you from As-Shaabit?” When he replied, “Yes”, I jumped quickly on my new steed, and we were off.
After venturing well into the desert enveloped in darkness, I noticed that all the other tourists were far away on the horizon. At that moment, my guide turned to me and said “Who is As-Shaabit”? It suddenly dawned on me: a huge mistaken identity! This was not “my guide” but just a stranger with a horse that I had unknowingly followed alone into the empty nighttime desert! A lesson learned: Never go looking for your guide-just let them find you!
