Solo Travel-5 Tips on How to Pack for Summer Travel: It’s hard to know how to pack when carry-on’s get smaller and fees greater.  Try out these 5 additional tips. See also our blog on travel to hot climes. Another choice? Check out our blog on staying cool on adventure travel.  Going Upriver on the Amazon, I was amazed at how hot it was trekking the rainforest in the rainy season. This past year hiking up hill tops in India in the monsoons was more of the same.

Do take a handheld battery-operated fan, and try some of our packing tips below.

Solo Travel-5 Tips on How to Pack for Summer Travel:

Tip One:

Pack a sun hat? Take a visor instead. Hats won’t stay on as you sail into the sunset or kayak past leaping whales. Worst yet, most sunhats can’t be folded and packed. As I found out on a 24+ hour trip and a series of flights, you can’t sleep in a straw hat. They will crush in the overhead bin so there are few options with a hat on a long trip.

Tip Two:

Pack the world’s smallest umbrella, and forget the slicker (unless you are headed to the North Sea!) As I found Upriver on the Amazon during the rainy season, slickers are way too hot.

As was popular in China and SE Asia, umbrellas were also “parasols” to make your own shade on tour.

Tip Three:

Even if you love to lounge on the beach, take light weight cover-up’s to avoid sunburn or aggressive  mosquitoes. Remember though: If you can see through the fabric so can the sun! My top choice is still the bright silks or synthetic long-sleeved shirts from India. They are easy to find on the Internet at www.Etsy.com.

Surfers choose “rashguards”. They help with too much sun but tend to be hot outside use for water sports.

Tip Four:

Layers make sense even in the tropics for pre-dawn and post-sunset. Do adjust the weight to the climate. You can buy local shirts and pants. If they don’t work at home, donate them before you leave, or repurpose them for sleepwear.

Tip Five:

Remember your most valuable accessory will be your electronic devices. Be sure to password protect your smartphone and other electronics. You don’t want to fight identity theft for months or years after you return home.  Be sure to take a packable case if you are required to place devices larger than phones in checked luggage. If you don’t want to “drown” your electronics, place them in secure plastic containers, and limit your liquids. You can always pick up shampoo, drug store items and toiletries at your destination.

Stay tuned for updated weekly travel and packing tips. Lastly, be sure to check your airline’s rules before you leave home to avoid having to pay to check and maybe chase a lost bag around the globe!
